The reason people feel emotionally drained is that they pursue too much. In a single lifetime, it’s impossible for everything to go exactly as planned. Some people often feel they are very unlucky, but in reality, there are others in the world who suffer even more than they do.
The reason people feel emotionally drained is that they have too good a memory. Both what should be remembered and what shouldn’t remain etched in their minds. Yet we often remember things we should forget, while forgetting things we should remember. Why do some say that fools are endearing and amusing? It is because they have forgotten the ridicule and indifference directed at them, forgotten the grudges and grievances of the world, forgotten worldly fame and fortune, and forgotten everything about this world—and so they will never feel mentally exhausted. Those who feel emotionally drained often lack self-cultivation and the resilience to cope. They insist on viewing simple matters as serious and overcomplicating the straightforward, which leads to great suffering. They feel sorrow, distress, and emotional exhaustion!
The reason people feel emotionally drained is that they lack a sense of contentment. Everyone’s sense of and expectations for happiness differ. A person who is easily satisfied and knows contentment will never feel emotionally drained. I once came across this saying: Happiness is like a pyramid—it has many layers. The higher you go, the less happiness there is, and the harder it becomes to attain. The closer you are to the base, the easier it is to feel happy; the more layers you climb from the base, the more intense your sense of happiness becomes. Happiness is, in fact, a kind of anticipation—a feeling of the heart.
The reason people feel mentally exhausted is that they overthink things. Physical fatigue isn’t scary; what’s truly frightening is mental exhaustion. Mental exhaustion affects one’s mood, distorts the soul, and jeopardizes both mental and physical health. In fact, everyone has moments when they’re weighed down by others or burdened by their own thoughts—it’s just that some people adjust in time, while others remain deeply mired in it, unable to find joy. In this society filled with competitive pressures, life presents too many challenges and worries; it’s unrealistic to expect to live without any stress at all. Human beings are inherently contradictory; we often find ourselves caught between hesitation and aspiration, trapped on the one-way street of worldly life—unable to go far forward, yet unable to turn back.
Those who feel mentally exhausted must learn to adapt; don’t stand alone in the darkness, lost in thought. Adapt to society; adapt to life. When your hands grow tired, you can put down what you’re holding; when your heart grows weary, please let go of the burdens within. Traveling light will make life more beautiful and your body healthier. There’s no need to place excessive importance on others’ applause and praise, nor should you make the outcomes of others’ actions your own goals. Only by continually expanding your mental horizons can you experience the true meaning and joy of life. Those with weary hearts must learn to let go, freeing themselves from the prison of their own minds. All depression buried deep within the heart only leads to gloom and melancholy; if you share your inner troubles with others, your mood will lighten and you’ll feel at ease. A cheerful and open-minded attitude can bring you a youthful, joyful, and vibrant spirit. Forget misfortune, look down on setbacks, and enjoy happiness—this, too, is the elevation of life. Human beings are truly enigmatic creatures; the one who knows you best is always yourself.
Those who feel emotionally drained must learn to adjust; they must understand themselves, avoid shackling themselves with self-imposed chains, and refrain from setting expectations and standards that are too high. When doing a somersault, find a soft landing; when climbing a ladder, find a step to come down. Realistically develop your potential and tailor your life goals to fit you. Those who feel emotionally drained must learn to smile; step out with a smile, and the world will open up before you. Affirm yourself, accept yourself, appreciate yourself, and love yourself. While striving for perfection, embrace your shortcomings and flaws. Only by appreciating yourself can you have confidence in yourself.
